DUAL PERFORMANCE: MIRRORED WIDTH MODULATION MIRRORED
FORGETUS COLLECTIVE GALLERY
STERLING LOFTS, TORONTO
SEPTEMBER 29 2011
DESCRIPTION
Inspired by a Borgesian narrative in which a sect in the Eighteenth century wore mirrored facial apparatus to gaze upon the world, this collaborative performance by Julia Abraham and Jamie Matechuk examines mirrored sensory perception through sound. The artists speak through fans, which both cut and extend each syllable of dialogue, creating a drone of extended wavelengths. The sound is distorted and repeated as feedback that slowly expands and modulates within the space. Accompanying the performance is a video projection by Jamie Matechuk that further explores concepts of memory, distortion, and mirrors.
